Be Present, it’s a Gift: Single Tasking Lowers Stress and Sharpens Focus

We are convinced that multi-tasking is the only way to get everything done on our To-Do List Today!

Consider what price we pay for attempting to give 100% of our attention to multiple tasks? Can we even do that? Are we able to give 100% of our attention to multiple things at once? Or are we shortchanging ourselves, the task at hand, and the people we aim to connect with?

Earlier this month, I attended a video training webinar. There were 20 people in attendance, and all but two had their cameras off. The instructor asked a question, no one responded, she then stated, “Your faces are all hidden, but I trust you are listening!” That got my attention, I know firsthand how difficult it is to present to a quiet group, with no feedback, no facial expressions and no audience participation. In that moment, I checked myself, shut down my own “auto pilot” mode, turned on my camera and became fully engaged.

Not long after, I had the privilege to present to the staff of a current client. I spent hours developing just the right presentation, ensuring the information was interesting and valuable to their business. Yet, during the meeting, 90% of the individuals in the room were staring at their phones or laptops. I could not tell if my message was getting through or if they were even listening to me. I left feeling a bit disrespected and ignored. Even though I know this client values our team deeply, their multi-tasking diminished the value of what I had to share.

 The Power of Single-Tasking 🎯

Being actively aware, being present to the current moment, conversation or task changes everything. Intentional listening is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and others. We all want to be heard, and frankly, we deserve to be heard.

When you shift your mind to the "right now," the benefits impact both your life and your business:

  •  Reduce Stress: Focusing your best self on a single-task makes challenges feel manageable.

  •  Execute Flawlessly: Concentrated focus leads to better decision-making, increased creativity, and fewer costly mistakes.

  •  Strengthen Relationships: Intentional responding, rather than an automatic, distracted reply, proves to the other person that you value them and their time.

Putting it into Practice 📴

On your next important phone call, meeting or client interaction, how can you share the gift of being present?

  • Close the tabs: Remove digital distractions by closing your email and silencing your phone.

  • Keep the camera on: If you're on a Zoom or Teams call, stay visible and interact with the speaker.

  • Catch your breath: If your mind starts to wander, take two deep breaths to anchor your focus back to the room.

  • Jot it down: Take quick physical notes to keep your mind locked into the conversation flow. This is a great trick to remain aware!

Bringing it home! 💗

This isn’t just a business strategy; it’s a personal requirement. Give your family and loved ones the true gift of your undivided attention. Make certain they know they are the priority. The simple act of listening and being present when you are with them will make them feel cherished.

Next time you take a walk, remove your earbuds. Don’t focus on the finish line or replay the events of the day. Listen to the sounds that surround you. Really look at what is right in front of you. When we are fully aware, nature loves to put on a beautiful show for us. A beautiful bloom of flowers, an amazing sunset or small animals we may otherwise overlook! The clinical insights from Psychology Today remind us, getting better at "being" in the moment directly enhances our ability to "do" our daily tasks with more energy and fulfillment. Immerse yourself in the power of creating real, joyous connections today!

Don't let life catch you on a Side Trax—be present, be aware, and enjoy the gift of today.
